WRD discharges surplus water from Chembarambakkam and Red Hills reservoirs

CHENNAI: The incessant rains in the catchment areas of Poondi, Red Hills, and Chembarambakkam reservoirs led the Water Resources Department (WRD) authorities to release surplus water from them.
The surplus water discharge from Poondi, which was 5,000 cubic feet of water per second (cusecs) on Thursday, increased to 12,000 cusecs from Friday morning.
Similarly, in Chembarambakkam and the Red Hills reservoirs, the WRD authorities released surplus water from Friday morning. While it was 1,000 cusecs in Chembarambakkam, in the Red Hills it was 500 cusecs of surplus water, said a WRD engineer.
Among the three reservoirs, Chembarambakkam recorded the highest rainfall, 14 cm, followed by Poondi reservoir, which recorded 10 cm. In the Red Hills reservoir, 9 cm of rainfall was reported.
The inflow of water into the reservoirs as per the 6 am readings of the WRD department showed that Poondi received an inflow of 12,750 cusecs of water, followed by Chembarambakkam with 6,498 cusecs and 2,281 cusecs at Red Hills.
