Washington: After winning the US Presidential elections, Trump has started riding on the victory chariot. But seeing Trump’s victory increasing, some people became afraid. As the exit polls of the US election started pointing towards Donald Trump becoming the second President, many Americans were already looking for a way out abroad.

Company data shows that Google searches for “move to Canada” increased by 1,270% in the 24 hours after the US East Coast poll closed on Tuesday, TOI reports. Similar searches about visiting New Zealand increased by almost 2,000%, while those for Australia increased by 820%.

People searched a lot on Google
Late Wednesday night on the US East Coast, Google searches about migration reached an all-time high for all three countries, according to a Google official. The search engine did not provide complete figures, but data from the Immigration New Zealand website showed that about 25,000 new US users logged in to the site on November 7, compared with 1,500 on the same day last year. Some immigration lawyers have also been inundated with questions.

Why are people afraid?
The sudden enthusiasm to go abroad was also seen after Trump’s 2016 victory. However, this time the Republican re-election followed a particularly divisive campaign, with nearly three-quarters of American voters saying they thought American democracy was in danger, according to an Edison Research exit poll. Many Americans are also worried that his presidency could create major rifts between Democrats and Republicans on issues like race, gender, what and how children are taught, and reproductive rights.

In a Reddit group dedicated to those leaving the United States, called “r/AmerExit,” hundreds of people shared suggestions about ideal destinations. Some users said they feared for the country, their safety, or both after Trump’s victory.
