Donald Trump on Syria: America’s newly elected President Donald Trump has said that Turkey was behind the Islamic groups that removed Assad from power in Syria. Trump said that Turkey had carried out an ‘unfriendly occupation’ of its neighbor. Describing Turkey as ‘very smart’ for the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Trump also condemned Assad’s brutal regime. Trump said, what he wanted for thousands of years and he got it.
America has deployed about 900 soldiers in eastern Syria. Since Assad’s ouster, Washington and Ankara have been engaged in discussions to prevent Islamic State terrorists from re-establishing their roots.
Praised Turkey but at the same time…
During the press conference in Florida, Trump also praised Türkiye’s strategy and called this entire move ‘very smart’. Trump said Turkey carried out an ‘unfriendly takeover’ without losing many lives. Trump said, I can say that Assad was a butcher… especially what he did to children.
America has recently conducted air strikes against ISIS fighters in Syria. Just a few days ago, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Washington is in contact with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Islamist group that dropped electric bombs on Damascus earlier this month and forced Assad to flee the country.
Asked what he would do with those troops, Trump pointed to Turkey’s military might and his strong relationship with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. And said, Erdogan is a person who has built a very strong, powerful army. (Inputs from Financial Times and Al Jazeera)
