Construction of tunnels began in the 1950s
The construction of the tunnels started in the year 1950 during the tenure of the then President Harry S. Truman. Then the condition of this President House, built about 150 years ago, started deteriorating. Cracks started forming at various places in its walls.

It was decided that the building needed to be rebuilt. Then President Truman shifted to the nearby Blair House. Stayed there for full three years. During this period the White House was constructed afresh. Meanwhile, keeping in mind the safety, a tunnel was also prepared which connected the East Wing to the West Wing. Through this the intelligence bunker could be reached.

Second secret tunnel was built in the late 80s
The second secret tunnel was completed in the year 1987, when Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the US. This tunnel was built due to the increasing threat of terrorist attacks during Reagan’s tenure.

According to the White House website, through the tunnel the President can reach an intelligence staircase, which is near the Oval Office, after reaching here and pressing a button, a secret door opens. However, there is no information about where this door leads.

Apart from this, there is also another tunnel, about which many people know. It goes through the basement of the East Wing to the Treasury Building. It was built by the 33rd President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It has been made in such a way that air strikes have no effect on it. Another tunnel connects the White House to the Old Executive Office Building. However, it is said that this tunnel opens at many places, from where one can reach many safe and unknown places outside. However, there is no written evidence of this.

The intelligence facilities in the White House have been named the President’s Emergency Operations Center (PEOC). Under this, GSA (General Services Administration), the organization that decides the security of government buildings, prepared intelligence bunkers and tunnels.
