Judge Merchan also noted that voters ultimately decided to return Trump to the presidency. He said, “Ordinary citizens do not get this legal protection. It is the office of the President which provides this security to the incumbent. “The citizens of this nation recently decided that you should once again have the benefit of these protections.”
Trump will not be sentenced to unconditional release, jail or fine
Judge Juan Merchan has sentenced Donald Trump to unconditional release. Merchan told Trump, “The only legitimate punishment that allows for a judgment or conviction without infringing on the highest office in the land is unconditional release.” The sentence, which was expected, means Trump remains guilty but will not have to face jail, fines or probation for his conviction in the hush money case.
“Sir, I wish you all the best for your second term,” Merchan said in his final remarks to Trump. Trump did not comment at the end of the hearing.
