Struck by bike in Andheri, 78-year-old critical in hospital

Mumbai: A 78-year-old man is in critical condition on ventilator support after being struck by a motorcycle on Sahar Road in Andheri (East) on Friday.
The police apprehended a 19-year-old college student who fled the scene after the collision with Mangilal Kothari.
The police charged the student with rash and negligent driving. “The accident took place in Koldongri area when Kothari was walking from his shop towards his residence nearby. He is in critical condition at Criticare hospital,” a police official said.
According to police reports, the motorcyclist struck Kothari from behind when he was crossing the road. The impact caused him to be thrown upwards before landing on the road divider.
The incident footage was circulated widely on social media platforms. The video showed onlookers rushing to assist Kothari, who remained unresponsive.
Kothari lives near the accident site with five members of his family, including his wife.
“My grandfather is very critical and hasn’t opened his eyes for five days now,” Kothari’s grandson, Mehul, said. “He suffered severe injuries to his left leg, head, nose and chin. He suffered multiple fractures. He was returning home in the evening from our family shop and met with an accident right opposite our house.”
Mehul said the police informed him that the two-wheeler had been confiscated while the accused was served a notice. “Within five days, we have spent almost four lakh rupees on his treatment. There must be some compensation. Our family is physically and mentally stressed. The past few days have been a nightmare. We demand justice and arrest of accused,” he said.
