New Delhi: Kamal Haasan has worked with MT Vasudevan Nair in films like ‘Kanyakumari’ and ‘Manorthangal’. He considered the veteran writer as his guru. Known for his brilliant contributions as a screenwriter, director and producer, Nair was a great figure of Indian literature and cinema. Expressing his condolences, Kamal Haasan wrote in a post on The film Kanyakumari introduced me to the world of Malayalam cinema. People who want to become writers or consider themselves writers, when they think about the works of MT Vasudevan Nair Sir as a writer, many emotions come within them. These emotions are in the form of respect, jealousy, fear and love.
Kamal Haasan considered himself a guru
Recalling his early years, Kamal Haasan said, ‘I was only 19 years old when I acted in the film Kanyakumari (1974). At that time I could not understand MT sir completely. After some time I saw his film ‘Nirmalayam’ (1973). If my love for cinema was a small lamp, then ‘Nirmalayam’ turned it into a blazing fire.
Haasan further said, ‘In my opinion, greats like Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, MT Vasudevan Nair and Girish Karnad may have been born in different states, but they were similar. MT Sir and his literary contribution will remain with us for hundreds of years. He will be alive even after we are gone. I don’t feel like saying goodbye sir. Please forgive me.

MT Nair was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode, where he died on Wednesday at the age of 91 due to heart failure. Nair, popularly known as ‘MT’, was one of the great writers of Malayalam and worked as the editor of ‘Mathrubhoomi’, a prestigious literary magazine of Kerala. Padma Bhushan awardee MT was a literary giant and cinematic visionary. His contribution in both the fields left an indelible mark. MT had directed seven films and written the scripts of about 54 others.
