New Delhi: A skywalk along the Sarai Kale Khan Regional Rapid Transit System station will be ready by mid-2025. It will connect Nizamuddin Railway Station and Ring Road on the other side, providing an entry or exit towards Ashram. This skywalk has been built close to the inter-state bus terminal, Delhi Metro station, city bus stand and Baansera Park road to help pedestrians.
“The skywalk, almost wrapping around this station and extending to nearby transport hubs, is being built to provide seamless connectivity, easy access and smooth movement, not only for the passengers of the Namo Bharat trains but for all the pedestrian travellers in the entire area,” said an official of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which is executing the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor.
The skywalk is aligned with the unpaid area of the station. On one side, it extends 280 metres to connect with Nizamuddin station, with six travelators for added convenience. On the other side, it provides an entry/exit towards Ashram. It is also connected to the metro station via lifts, escalators and staircases.
“Over the years, passengers at Sarai Kale Khan have struggled to switch between transport modes, facing overcrowding, chaotic traffic, and long walking distances to access other transport facilities,” said an NCRTC official. “People, especially the elderly, women and kids, face the challenge of crossing busy roads. As a result, many passengers prefer using private vehicles, contributing to congestion, pollution, and longer travel times, all of which undermine the effectiveness of public transportation systems.”
Passengers will be able to use this skywalk after the RRTS station becomes operational by June 2025.
The Sarai Kale Khan RRTS station is strategically situated near four major transport hubs: Delhi Metro (Pink Line), Northern Railway, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT and city bus services. It is, therefore, in a position to ensure seamless multimodal integration. “Its location is further enhanced by connectivity with the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Barapullah Flyover, Ring Road and DND Link, with proximity to the under-construction spur of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway,” noted an official.
Sarai Kale Khan is an important station in the Delhi section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor. It is also the largest station on the corridor, having six platforms and four tracks for Namo Bharat train movement. It will serve as the converging point for all three corridors (Delhi-Panipat, Delhi-SNB-Alwar, and Delhi-Meerut) of the first phase of RRTS. “This interoperability will allow passengers to travel between corridors without changing trains,” said an official.
Currently, Namo Bharat train services operate on a 42km stretch from Sahibabad to Meerut South, covering nine stations. The Delhi section, however, has four stations: Anand Vihar, New Ashok Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan and Jangpura. The trial runs of RRTS on the Delhi section, including Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar, are under way.
