NAGPUR: For the past two days, the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti has been demanding that the border areas of Belgaum be declared a Union Territory. In this regard, Congress MLA from Karnataka, Lakshman Savadi, also called for Mumbai to be made a Union Territory.
Reacting to this, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aditya Thackeray said that no leader, whether from Congress or BJP, will be allowed to insult Belgaum or Maharashtra.
Thackeray made this demand in a conversation with the media inside Vidhan Bhavan premises on Thursday, emphasising that any MLA making such a statement about making Mumbai a Union Territory should be dismissed.
He also remarked that Marathi people fought hard to gain control over Mumbai.
Meanwhile, reacting to the Belgaum issue, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) minister Gulabrao Patil said that comparing Belgaum with Mumbai was wrong. He stated that Mumbai never wronged any linguistic group like Belgaum did.
Mumbai belongs to Maharashtra and will remain so, as it is the financial capital of the country. He added that their demand is for Belgaum to be declared a Union Territory.
