Mumbai: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) intercepted two men carrying gold jewellery worth Rs 3.17 crore at Masjid station recently. On Wednesday, the jewellery was handed over to the Income Tax department as the men were not able to produce relevant documentation.
The RPF said the seizure was made on Dec 10. The duo, Chetan Goyal and Fulchand Lohar, were found running at Masjid station carrying a black bag between 9.10 pm and 9.30 pm. On suspicion, RPF personnel brought the duo to the CSMT post where the bag was examined. It was found to contain 4.6 kg of gold ornaments.
The men claimed to be carriers for a Lalbaug resident and couldn’t produce any documentation for the gold. On Dec 11, the RPF informed the IT department about the gold. It was handed over to the IT department on Wednesday after they produced a warrant. They will look into the case further.
