He further said, ‘By the time we reached Dibrugarh in Assam, our group had reduced to half. Some fell ill and were left behind, some died of hunger and disease. My mother had a miscarriage on the way. The remaining people were admitted to Dibrugarh Hospital for treatment. Mother and I were almost skeletons and my brother’s condition was critical. We spent two months in the hospital. When we recovered, we went to Calcutta (now Kolkata), and sadly my brother died there of smallpox.’
