Mumbai: The city experienced a cold Sunday morning with minimum temperatures dipping to 16.3°C, a sharp drop from 20.1°C recorded the previous day. The city’s minimum temperatures have been fluctuating over the past many days, with December 9 marking the season’s lowest temperature of 13.7°C. The IMD said that these changes were due to varying wind patterns.
The all-time lowest minimum temperature recorded for Mumbai for the month was 10.6 degrees on December 20, 1949.
While the IMD Santacruz observatory recorded minimum temperatures of 16.3 degrees, which was 2.2 degrees below normal, the Colaba observatory recorded 22.4 degrees, which was 1.3 degrees above normal. In its forecast for December 15, Monday, the IMD has said that minimum temperatures are likely to be around 16 degrees.
Weather enthusiast Abhijit Modak said that such fluctuations are not surprising. “It always fluctuates depending on winds and weather systems. If the next low-pressure system, part of the northeast monsoon, affects the region, temperatures may rise again after December 18-19. Alternatively, if easterly windy conditions prevail overnight, temperatures can also rise at coastal regions,” he said.
Starting from the end of last month, Mumbai also recorded multiple cases of extreme temperatures. On November 29, last month, Mumbai recorded a minimum temperature of 16.5 degrees, which was the lowest in eight years (for the month of November). Later, within a week on December 4, the megapolis recorded a maximum temperature of 37.3 degrees, making it the warmest December day in 16 years.
