Mumbai boat accident: Indian Navy chief to visit today for investigation; search operations under way

NEW DELHI: Indian Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi is visiting Mumbai on Friday to scrutinise the collision between a new naval speed boat and a ferry on December 18.
The Navy chief is scheduled to inspect the site in the sea near the Mumbai harbour where the incident occurred and subsequently visit the injured personnel recuperating in the naval hospital INHS Ashwini.
He will receive a comprehensive detailed briefing regarding the incident.
A board of inquiry has been constituted to probe the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Search and rescue operations are still under way in the area, according to Navy officials.
A ferry carrying 110 people, including children and crew, capsized after being rammed by a navy speedboat while en route to Elephanta Island from Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India.
The incident, which resulted in several fatalities, occurred around 6.30pm on near Uran, Karanja.
Mumbai boat crash: Search for missing seven-year-old continues
The search for seven-year-old Zohan Pathan, the other missing passenger, continues as police and naval authorities investigate the cause of the crash and the identity of the person operating the speedboat. The boat had recently undergone an engine replacement and was being tested at the time of the incident.
