Chennai: A 20crore state-of-the-art convention centre, ‘Maanaatu Arangam,’ will soon be established at the Tamil Nadu tourism development corporation (TTDC) beach resort complex in Mamallapuram, providing a world-class venue for cultural and tourism events. Announced by tourism minister Rajendran R during the inauguration of the 22nd Indian Dance Festival on Sunday, the project is a key component of the govt’s tourism development plans.
Mamallapuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, came alive on Sunday evening with vibrant music and dance as the month-long Indian Dance Festival commenced. Organised by TTDC, the festival aims to promote Tamil Nadu’s cultural heritage and will run until Jan 21, 2025.
During his speech, Rajendran highlighted the state govt’s commitment to enhancing tourism. “Over 28 crore visitors travelled to Tamil Nadu last year, reflecting our state’s appeal as a cultural and tourism hub. The govt has prioritised the development of more than 300 sites across Tamil Nadu, including heritage projects in Mamallapuram,” he said. The initiatives include a 30.02 crore immersive experience project at the Shore Temple and the 99 crore Nandavanam Heritage Park in Mamallapuram.
The festival, which has become a hallmark event for Mamallapuram, traces its roots to the late chief minister M. Karunanidhi, who extended its duration to a month in 2007-08. “In 2023, the event attracted 89,000 visitors. This year, we’ve crossed one lakh, showcasing its increasing popularity,” said Chengalpet district collector S Arulraj IAS.
The Indian Dance Festival celebrates India’s classical dance heritage with performances of Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, and Assamese dance. Folk artists from across Tamil Nadu also participate, adding a vibrant local flavour to the event.
