Flamingo lake to be preserved, to get security 24x7

Navi Mumbai: Some good news for nature enthusiasts. A 30-acre water body in Navi Mumbai — DPS Flamingo Lake which is frequented by flamingos — will now be preserved by the state as a ‘conservation reserve’. This decision has been made by a high-level committee, RTI documents reveal.
This means that the water body will be preserved as a ‘flamingo abode’. Security measures to be put in place include having CCTV cameras installed around the lake which will be barricaded, forest security officials will be deployed around the lake 24×7 and encroachment around the water body will be prohibited. Visitors will be allowed to enter the periphery of the lake and entry into the core abode of the pink birds will be restricted.
The committee’s decision to accord the status to the lake follows environmental concern after multiple flamingo deaths, prompting the state govt to explore protection measures.
Seventeen flamingos died near the site this year. Seven fell to their death in January after flying into a signboard, while 10 perished in May as water flow to the place was disrupted. Locals and environmentalists have staged protests, seeking protection for the lake. State minister Ganesh Naik too had spoken of “negligence” in preserving the water body.
NGO NatConnect Foundation has got information that the state mangrove cell will submit recommendations to the govt to designate the lake as a “conservation reserve”. Its director, B N Kumar, has sought detailed recommendations as they were not publicly disclosed.
A forest official said that a survey of the lake has been done and a report submitted to the authority concerned.
