Excavation work triggers cave-in at Navi Mumbai highrise

Navi Mumbai: The excavation work being carried out by a developer for the construction of a commercial building in Sector 15, CBD-Belapur, resulted in a cave-in of the stretch of the drive-in area of the adjacent residential highrise, Mangal Tower, on Tuesday. The tower residents panicked after the incident and immediately rushed downstairs to safety. The NMMC’s town planning department summoned the VJTI team on Wednesday to carry out an inspection to seek the technical report for the cave-in.
Ranesh Kokate, Fire Officer at CBD-Belapur, said, “Upon receiving information about the cave-in of the road at the premises of Mangal Tower residential building in Sector 15, CBD-Belapur on Tuesday night, our rescue team rushed to the spot. The drive-in stretch of road in the building premises developed wide cracks due to the excavation work carried out by a developer of an under-construction commercial building adjacent to Mangal Tower. As a safety precautionary measure, all residents were evacuated immediately. The excavation work by the developer did not affect the two other adjacent residential buildings. The NMMC’s engineering department team reached the spot and carried out an inspection of the residential building and ascertained that it was safe to reside in the building as the cave-in did not affect the building’s structure. However, some residents locked their apartments and shifted to their relatives’ residences.”
Somnath Kekan, NMMC’s additional town planning officer, said, “We summoned the engineering team of VJTI on Wednesday and sought a technical report of the exact cause of the cave-in at Mangal Tower residential building. After receiving the technical report, the concerned developer, due to whose excavation work the cave-in occurred, will be served with a notice and further legal course of action will be initiated.”
