Driver, 38, crushed to death as truck falls into pit at Koyambedu

Chennai: In a freak accident, a 38-year-old truck driver from Kallakurichi died when his truck fell into an under-construction sump when he tried to reverse the vehicle, at Koyambedu on Friday night.
Police said Sankar, 38, of Kallakurichi was assigned by a contractor to bring construction material to a site at Koyambedu. On Friday, Sankar brought the blue metal from Tambaram to the site and unloaded it near the place. While reversing the vehicle he failed to notice a new sump. One side of the vehicle got trapped in the sump pit and the heavy vehicle toppled. Sensing the situation, the driver leapt off his cabin to the ground, but was crushed by the truck,” said an office. He was trapped under the lorry cabin.
On information, police and fire and rescue personnel used a crane to lift the toppled lorry, but Sankar was declared dead by doctors.
The Koyambedu traffic investigation wing police registered a case of negligence and further investigations are on.
