Washington. This week a powerful cyclone ‘Bomb’ hit America, which is one of the most dangerous cyclones to hit the country in the last 10 years. It caused such havoc in America that the entire country was in panic. Due to the ‘Bomb’ cyclone, strong winds, heavy rain and snow storm were also seen. Not only this, due to the storm there have also been many incidents of power cuts and falling of trees in the area.
A powerful cyclone ‘Bomb’ and a slow-moving atmospheric river wreaked havoc on the US west coast this week. Electricity was cut off in millions of homes and at least two people died. According to news agency Xinhua, the storm rapidly turned into a ‘bomb’ cyclone on Tuesday. It brought hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and snowfall to parts of Washington state, Oregon and California.
The US National Weather Service (NWS) reported wind speeds of 158 km per hour on the Oregon coast and 124 km per hour in Mount Rainier in Washington state. At least two people died in the storm in Washington state and about 600,000 homes lost power.
As of Friday evening, more than 260,000 people remained without power in Washington state and Oregon and more than 92,000 in California. In Oregon, the atmospheric river has brought heavy rainfall. Some areas may receive 20 to 30 cm rainfall. NW has issued a flood warning for Oregon until Friday evening.
California felt the wrath of the atmospheric river (a narrow corridor of moisture in the Earth’s atmosphere), with some areas receiving 15 to 30 centimeters of rainfall by Thursday. At the same time, about 12 small landslides were reported in the state in just 24 hours.
Transport was badly damaged in the entire area. In Washington state, a train collided with a fallen tree north of Seattle. However, it is a matter of relief that there is no report of any injury among the 48 passengers. The storm also caused heavy snowfall in the higher areas. A snowstorm warning was issued for much of Washington state’s Cascade Range. Northern Sierra Nevada and Oregon Cascades are also expected to receive 30 to 61 centimeters of snowfall.
Climate scientists have warned that this storm has exposed California’s rapidly increasing weather patterns. The National Weather Service has urged residents of affected areas to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The atmospheric river is expected to persist through Saturday morning, with the possibility of another storm system developing over the weekend.
A bomb cyclone in 2018 helped popularize the term on social media. It brought snowfall and stormy winds in the south-east, which were almost hurricane-like. In 2022, another bomb cyclone brought extreme weather and severe cold to most parts of the country.
