Cops bust bike theft gang, 4 held

Chennai: Police busted a bike theft racket by arresting two thieves, a bike mechanic and an agent at Kodungaiyur. They recovered four stolen bikes from the gang.
Police said that the two thieves — B Gautham, 21, of Kolathur and Abdul Rahman, 22, of Kodungaiyur — would steal bikes and hand them over to S Vijay, 27, who runs a workshop at Padappai. M Sridhar, 24, a resident of Padappai in Kancheepuram, would prepare forged registration certificates (RC) of the vehicles and sell them as second-hand vehicles on online portals.
An investigation officer said, “They used details of vehicles that met with road accidents to forge the documents.” They altered the bike’s registration number and sold these bikes through online portals.
Police said a postal department employee, R Balakrishnan, 30, of Tiruvalluvar Nagar in Kodungaiyur, parked his bike outside his house on Dec 10. When returned after a while, the bike was missing.
Based on Balakrishnan’s complaint, police registered a case and searched for the suspect. A team scanned CCTV camera footage in the vicinity and identified Gautham.
During questioning, Gautham spilled the beans and the other three were arrested.
The arrested suspects were remanded in judicial custody by a magistrate court in the city.
