The women of Pallishree village of Sizgram Panchayat of Bharatpur block of Murshidabad district are writing a new story of economic self-reliance. About 95% of the women here are earning thousands of rupees every month along with handling the household chores. Their hard work has not only improved the economic condition of their families but has also set an example in the society.

Identity created by making winter clothes
The women of Pallishree village make winter clothes called Balaposh throughout the year. These coats reach not only the local villages but also the cities. During the four months of winter, these women do not even get time to breathe. The clothes made by them are also exported to areas like Birbhum and Maldah. Making balaposh has now become a cottage industry in the village.

changing destiny through hard work
Anima Sarkar of the village says that she has been making Balaposh for the last 12-13 years. Earlier they used to get 40-50 rupees per hair cover, which has now increased to 80 rupees. Anima makes three Balaposh daily and dreams of saving some money and starting her own business. Similarly, it is the same story of other women of the village, who are dreaming big with small steps.

Steps towards economic prosperity
Out of about 700 women of the village, 650 are engaged in making hair wraps. A woman is earning up to Rs 7000 a month. Businessman Shrivas Sarkar told that each Balaposh is sold for Rs 300 to 600. This has not only increased the income of women, but also increased their self-confidence.

Balaposh: New look of old sarees
Balaposh is made by joining two old silk sarees. Silk cotton is inserted inside it and stitching is done on top like Kantha. This process is not only environment friendly but has also become a sustainable source of employment for women.

Panchayat support and pride
Sizgram Panchayat head Rasmina Begum appreciated the hard work and achievements of these women. He said, “The women of Pallishree are showing new ways of earning money through their hard work. “This initiative of his can become an inspiration for other villages.”
