American NSA Jack Sullivan is visiting Delhi on January 5-6 and it is expected that he will discuss with Indian officials the impact of the dams being built by China. A senior American official gave this information on Friday. Washington and its Western allies have long considered India an important power to counter China’s growing influence in Asia and beyond.

“We have seen in many places in the Indo-Pacific region that China’s upstream dams, such as in the Mekong region, are having serious environmental and climate impacts on downstream countries,” a senior US official said ahead of Sullivan’s visit. Can.” The official also said that during this visit, America will also discuss the problems with which India is facing.

A day earlier on Friday, India said on China’s plan to build a big dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet that it will continue monitoring and take necessary measures to protect its interests. In its first reaction to the proposed dam, New Delhi urged Beijing to ensure that activities in the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra do not harm countries located downstream.

The Indian government has conveyed its concerns to China over the plan to build a hydropower dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet. This river flows in India. Chinese officials say hydropower projects in Tibet will not have any major impact on the environment or water supplies downstream. Construction of the dam, which will be the largest of its kind in the world and has an annual capacity to generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, was approved last month.

A US official said that Washington hopes that during the visit, issues such as civil nuclear cooperation, artificial intelligence, space, military licensing and Chinese economic overreach will be discussed. Another American official said that American officials will not meet the Dalai Lama during this visit.

Before leaving office, Sullivan will also deliver a speech on India-centric foreign policy at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi during his visit to India. Newly elected President Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of America on January 20 and MP Michael Waltz will take over the post of National Security Advisor during his tenure.

In recent years, Washington and New Delhi have come very close to each other. However, there have sometimes been differences over issues such as the mistreatment of minorities, New Delhi’s relations with Russia amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and an alleged assassination plot against Sikh separatists on American and Canadian soil.
