Atishi writes to Shah on Rohingya as AAP, BJP continue to spar

New Delhi: Chief minister Atishi on Sunday wrote to Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday, accusing BJP-led Centre of settling “a large number of illegal Rohingya” in different parts of the city.
Meanwhile, responding to AAP’s claims that settling refugees here was a “conscious decision” of BJP-led NDA govt, Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri accused the party of indulging in “politics of diversion, false narratives and half-truths”.
BJP had earlier complained to Election Commission about illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshis registered as voters in Delhi “at the behest of AAP”.
Citing two tweets by Puri in 2022, Atishi alleged that the Union govt settled a large number of illegal Rohingya in different parts of the capital by keeping the people and govt of Delhi in the dark. “This seems to be going on for the past several years. On Aug 17, 2022, Union urban development minister Hardeep Puri published two tweets that clearly show that it is a conscious decision and policy of BJP govt to settle these refugees in Delhi,” she alleged in the letter to Shah.
“From the post of Puri, it seems they were settled into EWS flats of Bakkarwala. These flats were meant for the poor people of Delhi. It appears that the rights and facilities meant for the people of Delhi are being given away to migrants,” Atishi claimed.
Puri hit back with an X post on Sunday saying, “AAP continues with its politics of diversion, false narratives and half-truths. Facts and actual position on illegal Rohingya migrants were immediately clarified through a tweet on the same day, which they selectively chose to ignore, and continue to do so.” He added: “No Rohingya migrant has been given a govt house in Delhi. In fact, contrary to the drummed-up AAP rhetoric, they are actually the ones who play host to the illegal Rohingya in Delhi, have settled them in large numbers, give them electricity and water, and even pay them Rs 10,000,” he alleged.
MP Basuri Swaraj said that the letter written by Atishi was proof of her administrative and political immaturity. “No Rohingya illegal migrant in Delhi has been allotted an EWS house. MHA clarified this matter in its press release on Aug 17, 2022. If, as CM, she is unaware of these facts, it is a matter of serious concern. And if she is aware, I appeal to her to stop spreading misinformation and creating divisions,” she said.
