New Delhi: Chief minister Atishi on Tuesday inaugurated a four-storey academic block at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Mukundpur village, calling it “better than private schools”.
The new block has 36 classrooms, three laboratories and a principal’s office. It will benefit nearly 1,000 students from Samta Vihar and Mukundpur. “This magnificent block, built amid the densely populated and narrow lanes of Mukundpur village, is even more impressive than private schools,” Atishi said. She praised the impact of AAP govt’s education reforms. “Today, poor children no longer remain poor. With access to quality education, they are able to fulfil her dreams.”
“From 1947 to 2015, Delhi’s govt schools saw the construction of 24,000 classrooms,” she asid. “But in just 10 years, AAP govt completed 65 years’ worth of work, building over 22,000 classrooms. I studied in a large private school, but even that didn’t have such modern facilities,” Atishi added.
Children welcomed the chief minister with a traditional tilak. She unveiled a plaque marking the inauguration and later interacted with the students and inspected the school. Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha was present at the event.
According to an official, before the building was constructed, overcrowding had resulted in up to 80 students being crammed in a classroom, which impacted the quality of education. However, with the addition of the new academic block, the education standards are expected to improve significantly.
Jha emphasised that the new building would ease the pressure on other schools. “Even today, 1,500 to 2,000 students from Mukundpur have to travel to schools in Model Town and Adarsh Nagar. This new building will reduce that burden,” Jha said.
