Mumbai: Famous filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has once again made a scathing attack on Bollywood. In a recent interview, he said that the Hindi film industry neither has the capacity to make a film like ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ nor ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule’. Pushpa 2 directed by Sukumar has become the highest grossing Indian film of the year 2024.
In an interview given to ‘Hollywood Reporter India’, Anurag said, ‘Hindi film industry is now afraid of taking risks. They don’t understand anything. They can’t make a film like ‘Pushpa’ because they don’t have the brain to make it. In the South, filmmakers are invested in and empowered but here, everyone is just busy creating the ‘universe’. Do They Understand Their Own Universe? This is arrogance. When you create the universe, you start thinking of yourself as God.
Historic success of ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule’
Directed by Sukumar and starring Allu Arjun, ‘Pushpa 2’ also stars Fahadh Faasil and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles. The film has so far earned a global gross of ₹1760 crore and is soon moving towards breaking the record of ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’.
Strong comment on studio model
Anurag also cursed the studio model of the Indian film industry. He said that this model does not leave any room for creativity. He gave the example of his film ‘Kennedy’, which was appreciated at the Cannes Film Festival but could not be released in India. He said, “I have distanced myself from ‘Kennedy’ because I don’t want it to get caught in a ‘Black Friday’ situation. Now I will not let anything pull me down in my life.”
‘Kennedy’ and Anurag’s film journey
Rahul Bhatt and Sunny Leone played the lead roles in ‘Kennedy’. This film won accolades in many international film festivals including Cannes. Although Anurag has not directed any film after this, he has acted in films like ‘Leo’, ‘Maharaja’ and ‘Viduthalai Part 2’.
Anurag Kashyap’s statements have once again raised questions on the way Bollywood works. It will be interesting to see whether the Hindi film industry will accept this criticism and move towards change.
