NAGPUR: The winter session of the Maharashtra state legislature witnessed high-voltage drama on its fourth day as Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders, including Congress MLAs Nana Patole, Nitin Raut, and Ambadas Danve, staged a protest against Union Minister Amit Shah’s recent statement.
Carrying placards with messages like “Baba Saheb ka Apman Nahi Sahega Hindustan” and “Ambedkar ka Naam Fashion Nahi, Passion Hai”, the leaders marched from Samvidhan Square to Vidhan Bhavan. Before starting their march, they paid floral tributes to the statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Samvidhan Square.
As the leaders reached the , they intensified their protest by raising slogans such as “Jai Bhim” on the staircase of the building, where an official photoshoot of elected representatives was underway. The symbolic protest aimed to highlight their objection to Amit Shah’s remarks, which they alleged undermined the principles upheld by Dr Ambedkar.
MVA leaders accused the BJP of failing to uphold the Constitution and marginalising Ambedkar’s contributions. Congress leader Nana Patole said, “Ambedkar’s legacy is not just a name; it is the foundation of our democracy. Any insult to him is an insult to the nation.”
The protest marks a continuation of the opposition’s strategy to corner the BJP govt during the winter session, which was marred by intense debates over governance and constitutional issues. The BJP has yet to issue an official response to the accusations.
Observers believe that the incident could escalate tensions between the ruling party and the opposition as the session progresses.
