Chennai: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) Southern Zone in Chennai directed the Kerala govt to reimburse Tamil Nadu for expenses incurred in clearing illegally dumped biomedical waste.
Holding Kerala’s local self-governance department accountable, the tribunal responded to TN’s plea for recovering cleanup costs during Wednesday’s hearing. The NGT criticised Kerala for its failure to prevent biomedical waste dumping in TN’s border villages and Tirunelveli.
It also questioned the state’s approval of new hospitals without adequate waste treatment facilities. Currently, Kerala operates only one processing plant, with five proposed facilities delayed due to legal disputes.
