CHENNAI: Three Income Tax officials and a police sub-inspector attached to the Triplicane police were arrested for robbing Rs 20 lakh from a man who came to Chennai to buy a CT scanning machine on Wednesday.
The arrested individuals were identified as I-T inspector Dhamodharan, another officer Pradeep, SP Prabhu, and a police SI Raja of Triplicane police station.
They were detained by Triplicane police for interrogation based on a complaint by the victim from Vellore. Rs 15 lakh out of Rs 20 lakh in his possession was allegedly extorted by these officers.
According to the Triplicane police, the victim, H Mohammad Ghouse of Washermenpet, was carrying Rs 20 lakh to buy a CT scan machine for a businessman, Juniad Ahmed from Vamiyambadi, who gave him the money. On Monday, Ahmed called Ghouse and told him to collect Rs 10 lakh from a man in Triplicane.
As Ghouse was traveling on his bike near the Tamil Nadu govt Multi Super Speciality Hospital located at the Omandurar Estate, SI Raja stopped him. He checked Ghouse’s bag and found the cash. He then alerted another person, and three others came to the spot.
The four men, claiming to be Income Tax department officials, showed Ghouse ID cards and took him in their car. As they reached Egmore, they threatened him with a knife and robbed the cash from him. He was then dropped from the car and let go.
Based on a complaint from Ghouse, the police registered a case.
