Chennai: Four men posing as police and income tax officials cheated a man of `20 lakh on Monday night. The victim, H Mohammed Ghouse, 31, of Old Washermenpet, had brought the money from Vaniambadi to buy a CT scanning machine in Triplicane. Police are searching for the suspects.
Police said Ghouse was on his way to Triplicane from Washermenpet on his bike with the cash when he was intercepted by a man in police uniform. He questioned Ghouse about the contents in the bag. When Ghouse said it was cash for business purposes, the ‘officer’ called three others in plainclothes. They presented identity cards to show that they were income tax department officers. They said they had to take him to their headquarters in Nungambakkam for an inquiry and put him in a car.
When the car reached Egmore, they held him at knifepoint and seized his cash bag and fled, according to the complainant.
The Triplicane police have registered a case and a probe is on.
