TRICHY: Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday urged the Tamil Nadu govt to implement precautionary measures to mitigate damage from heavy rainfall and distribute compensation to affected residents and agriculturists.
In a statement, EPS highlighted that paddy fields in delta districts — Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagappattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore – have been inundated due to rainfall in the past two days.
He insisted that govt officials should inspect the affected agricultural fields and evaluate the damage to disburse appropriate compensation.
Heavy rainfall led to considerable waterflow in rivers and tributaries across the districts, he noted.
Given the vulnerable state of riverbanks in numerous locations, they risk breaching. Hence, revenue department and water resources department officials should identify susceptible areas and reinforce them with sandbags, EPS stated. Officials should implement comprehensive precautionary measures for all water bodies, he added.
He said many residential areas in Tirunelveli district were flooded. “I urge the govt to drain the rainwater using motor pumps and provide shelter, sustenance and medical assistance to affected residents,” he said.
Citing reports of demonstrations regarding delayed relief distribution following recent cyclone Fengal, EPS said the DMK govt under chief minister MK Stalin should ensure that support reaches all affected people.
