New Delhi: An over 8-hour protest by students at Campus Law Centre of Delhi University took a dramatic turn following police intervention on Monday night. The students were demanding postponement of exams, citing issues such as “incomplete syllabus, mid-course faculty changes, delayed allotments and sudden syllabus update.”
A police officer said nearly 60 police officers and some paramilitary forces were deployed at the scene.
One of the protesters alleged that police used force to disperse the students. “Instead of addressing our concerns, the administration was indifferent. The situation worsened when police entered the campus and resorted to force, including a lathicharge, against peaceful students. Many were injured,” the student said.
However, police denied these allegations. “There was no lathicharge or use of force. The students were steadfast in their demands since morning and barricaded the gates of the law faculty, preventing the dean from leaving. The dean and the faculty proctor requested assistance from Delhi Police, which led to the arrival of police and paramilitary personnel,” a police officer said.
