MUMBAI: Over nine lakh pre-litigation cases and nearly 1.8 lakh pending cases were settled on Saturday across Maharashtra at the fourth Lok Adalat. A special drive additionally undertaken cleared over 52,000 pending cases five days prior to the Lok Adalat, which was flagged off by Bombay high court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya.
Over 10 lakh matters were settled and no longer clogged court dockets.
The state raked in over Rs 45 crore in fines from nearly 5.6 lakh traffic challans, sent via e-notices, said a note sent by the deputy secretary of Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority.
In this National Lok Adalat, motor accident compensation cases, bank recovery claims, criminal compoundable offences, matrimonial disputes, dishonour of cheques cases, cases relating to electricity matters, matters relating to telephone bills, and traffic police e-challan cases formed the bulk of disputes sought to be settled out of court. A recent land acquisition execution petition filed in 2024 at Buldhana saw an early closure and avoided the long-drawn battle that usually ensues. The plea was settled for Rs 36 crore, in one of the highest claim settlements.
