Chennai: Cattle attacks have resurfaced after a brief lull, with an 85-year-old man suffering serious injuries after a cow attacked him in Seven Wells on Monday night.
The cow struck Narasimhan while he was walking with a stick. His cries for help alerted passersby, who took him to Stanley govt hospital. Doctors are treating him for hip injuries and fractures, and his condition remains critical.
The cow belonged to Varathan, a Nammalwarpet resident who regularly lets his cattle roam freely, said a local, Bodhirajan. Police registered a case and said they will take strict action against negligent cattle owners. Police added that such offenders could face up to three years in jail.
GCC has increased fines for owners who fail to restrain their animals. First-time offenders now face a 10,000 fine, and 15,000 for repeat offenders. In 2023, GCC impounded 4,237 cows and collected 92,04,700 in fines.
This incident follows a string of similar attacks. On Jan 29, a cow attacked 71-year-old retired security guard Kanniappan in Triplicane. In Oct 2023, Sundaram, an 80-year-old man with speech disabilities, died after being attacked by a cow in the same area. Police booked the owners responsible in both cases.
