Court sentences man to 20-yr RI for sexual assault on mentally challenged boy

New Delhi: A Delhi court recently sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment of 20 years for committing penetrative sexual assault on a mentally challenged boy in 2014. Additional sessions judge Ramesh Kumar, while awarding the sentence, said such offences should not be dealt with lightly.
The survivor was found naked, unconscious and bleeding under a flyover on May 28, 2014, following which an FIR was registered.
“I am of the considered opinion that the convict does not deserve any kind of leniency, and accordingly, he is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 20 years. The victim in the case is 90% mentally disabled, with whom the convict committed penetrative sexual assault. Such offences with a child victim should not be dealt with lightly,” said the court.
The court was hearing the arguments on sentencing against the 50-year-old man, a rickshaw puller, who was sentenced under section 4 (penetrative sexual assault) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
Additional public prosecutor Anju Bharti sought maximum punishment for the convict.
The court also awarded Rs 3 lakh compensation to the survivor.
