Court issues notice on Hussain's bail plea in 2020 riots conspiracy case

New Delhi: After former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain filed a fresh bail application in a conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, a court recently issued a notice to Delhi Police.
The next hearing of the case is scheduled for Dec 19.
Hussain, currently in jail, recently joined Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). He is expected to contest the upcoming Delhi assembly elections from Mustafabad constituency.
In his bail plea, Hussain pointed out that his previous application was denied on March 30, 2024. Since then, he served an additional nine months in custody, bringing his total jail time to over four years and eight months.
Opposing the imposition of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), he said that protesting against govt policies didn’t amount to terrorism. Further, he stated that he never incited anyone to resort to violence.
The former councillor, citing delays in the legal process, told the court that arguments on framing charges were still ongoing, and an interim HC order related to a co-accused had further delayed proceedings.
His plea also said that he was not named in the original FIR and that his arrest was based solely on disclosure statements from the co-accused. MSID:: 116340218 413 |
