New Delhi: LG VK Saxena on Sunday said he had visited south Delhi’s Rangpuri Pahadi and Kapashera and was saddened to see the deplorable conditions in which the residents lived.
“Locals spoke about sewage-filled streets, irregular water and electricity supply and poor sanitation. Women are forced to fetch water from tankers arriving once every week,” Raj Niwas said.
LG directed immediate clean-up efforts and urged officials to address the critical problems. He also called on Delhi govt to visit these areas and take swift action, Raj Niwas added.
Posting a video on X that showed scattered garbage, overflowing sewers and people complaining about the civic apathy, he said, “The stinking water accumulated on the streets and roads is not from rain but from overflowing sewers. The women narrating their problems and heart-wrenching sufferings are from Delhi, not from any other state or country.”
“It was extremely disappointing and disturbing to see the helplessness and miserable lives of lakhs of people in the capital again yesterday (Saturday),” he said.
“Similar conditions were seen earlier in various areas like Burari, Kiradi, Kalandar Colony, Sangam Vihar, Mundka and Gokulpuri. After repeated requests from residents, I visited Rangpuri Pahari in south Delhi and Kapashera in south-west Delhi yesterday along with local MP Ramvir Bidhuri,” he said.
These areas also lack basic civic services. There is no drainage, due to which the narrow lanes are constantly filled with silt and dirty water. There is no trace of a road. Power supply is erratic, he said.
“There is an acute shortage of drinking water, forcing the women to carry water in buckets from the tanker that comes once in 7-8 days. The residents of the area expressed their problems regarding inadequate electricity supply, irregular water distribution, heaps of garbage on the roads, and a complete lack of cleanliness,” he said.
Saxena said a cleanliness drive will start, and Raj Niwas will monitor the progress of these efforts to ensure that the residents get at least the basic amenities for a better quality of life.
Bidhuri said: “There are no drains, no roads, and no other civic amenities. There is only the stink of mud and silt and heaps of garbage all around. One can see how an elected govt turns away from its duties and responsibilities and forgets the public.”
