Thane: A jewellery store salesman was killed after two unidentified bike-borne men fired at him in Shahapur and fled with his bag late on Saturday.
“Initial probe suggests that the robbers targeted Dinesh Chaudhary (25) as he often took gold and silver for safekeeping after shutting shop. But on Saturday, he was carrying documents related to the shop in his bag,” said inspector Jitendra Thakur of Shahapur police station.
The incident took place at 10.30pm, when Chaudhary and other employees of Mahalaxmi Jewellers were returning home after closing the shop in the Gotheghar area. Two men on a bike fired at Chaudhary, threatened the other staffers and fled with his bag. Police said when a vegetable vendor rushed to Chaudhary’s aid, the accused threatened her too.
The staffers rushed Chaudhary to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning.
Shahapur police have registered a case of robbery and murder against the two unknown men. They have retrieved CCTV footage from outside the jewellery store and nearby areas to identify the men and trace their escape route.
Thane Rural police have set up four teams to track down the two accused.
The firing incident has caused panic among the business community in the area, who urged police to nab the culprits as soon as possible.
