Thane: In a multi-city operation, various units of the Thane crime branch arrested five persons from Surat, who were allegedly involved in stealing ornaments worth Rs 5.79 crore. A senior officer said multiple police teams analysed CCTV footage that led them to identify and track the suspects.
“After the heist, the two primary suspects attempted to evade capture by boarding an express train and travelling to Surat. Following extensive surveillance, the police teams traced them to a building in Surat’s Sangrampura area,” said a senior police official.
The Surat police also assisted the crime branch sleuths. During interrogation, four suspects revealed information that led to the arrest of a fifth person who was found in possession of the stolen ornaments. The police recovered a part of the gold from the accused.
However, investigating officers expressed scepticism about the initially reported value of the stolen items, suggesting that the affected jeweller may have inflated the worth of the stolen ornaments. “The background of the accused and other details are being investigated, and the amount of gold stolen will also be determined during the probe. Everything will be thoroughly probed,” said a senior police officer.
Crime branch officials said they are continuing their investigation to uncover any additional aspects of the case and identify possible further connections.
