CHENNAI: Rain intensity may reduce over Chennai and the suburbs in the next three days, but rainfall may return by the middle of next week as a low-pressure area may form over the Bay of Bengal around Dec 16 and move towards Tamil Nadu coast.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall over 10 coastal and delta districts, including Chengalpet, on Dec 17 and for 12 districts, including Chengalpet and Kancheepuram, on Dec 18.
“As of now, the low-pressure area may move towards Tamil Nadu. We will update on where exactly it will move after the system forms,” said S Balachandran, deputy director general, IMD.
On Dec 14, the city and the suburbs may receive light rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over some areas. The skies may be partly cloudy. The maximum temperature may be around 30-31 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature may be around 24-25 degrees Celsius.
The low pressure is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rain (orange alert) in isolated places over Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts.
Since Oct 1, Tamil Nadu recorded 54 cm, around 32% excess. Balachandran said the excess was 16% on Thursday, and the widespread rainfall in the state pushed the excess rain to 32% in 24 hours.
