Children’s play area, gym to woo visitors to solar-powered Baansera Park

New Delhi: In a bid to increase the footfall to the Baansera Park, located at the Sarai Kale Khan on the western bank of the River Yamuna, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Thursday opened a children’s play area within the park—equipped with swings, gym equipment and monkey bars. While the play area is free for kids, the entry to the park costs Rs 50 for those above 13 years. The facility was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.
“The highlights of the children’s play area include a fitness zone, a play mound and a climbing wall, among others. For adventure-lovers, there is a trail built full of obstacles,” said an official, adding, “children can enjoy the sandpit and the multi-play structure packed with activities. The spider web provides an exciting challenge for older kids to test their agility, and a charming wooden train designed for toddlers offers a safe and engaging space,” said an official.
With the foundation stone laid in August 2022, Baansera Park was developed in a span of six months. More than 25,000 varieties of bamboo saplings, sourced from Assam, were planted here. Later, flowers were planted and lawns were developed, and a restaurant with a closed and open-air facility was opened.
Other recreational features at the park include two musical fountain shows organised every day, a pathway of Tulips and a botanical enrichment zone with plants like the medicinal Lakadong turmeric plant from Meghalaya being cultivated along with bamboo clusters.
On Thursday, the LG also inaugurated a 2-megawatt capacity solar power plant at this park to bolster the renewable energy infrastructure in the capital. The solar park, spread over a 20,000 sqm area and built on a RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) model, will provide DDA with solar power at a fixed tariff of Rs 4.42 per unit for 25 years.
“The project is anticipated to generate approximately 27 lakh units of electricity annually. It is expected to benefit nearly 144 parks under the group net metering policy,” said officials.
