Vasai: An FIR has been registered against seven residents of a housing society in Nalasopara for allegedly assaulting a 38-year-old neighbour and making derogatory remarks following a suspected violent brawl between two children recently. The woman and her husband also alleged that they were subjected to threats and abuse referring to their community.
In her complaint to police, the woman, Sujata Gurav, claimed that her 12-year-old son came home sobbing with a swollen lip after a game of football with other children from the housing society on the evening of Dec 15. She said she approached Brijesh Singh, the father of the boy who is suspected to have assaulted her son. “While I sought an explanation, other families gathered in support of the Singhs. I then left the place quietly,” she said.
Gurav said she, her husband and their daughter went to the vegetable market a little later, leaving their injured son alone at home. “I got frantic calls from my son, who said that a residents were banging and kicking on the flat’s entrance door,” she said, adding that as soon as they rushed back home and reached the lobby of their floor, a few residents held her and assaulted her repeatedly. Some other residents alerted police, who took the mob as well as the Guravs to the police station.
Achole police in Nalasopara said a non-cognisable complaint was initially filed and an FIR processed on Dec 18. Sections 189 (2) (unlawful assembly), 191(2) (rioting), 190 (every member of an unlawful assembly is guilty of any offence committed by a member of the assembly), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insults that are intended to provoke breach of peace or other offence), 131 (assault or criminal force) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been invoked. The FIR mentions the presence of five to six other unidentified persons during the time of Gurav’s alleged assault. Sujit Kumar Pawar, senior inspector of Achole police station, said the investigation is underway. Gurav said police have taken the CCTV camera footage from the housing society.
