NAGPUR: Alleging a rift within the NDA, senior NCP leader Jitendra Awhad criticised the Modi-led central govt over its ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which secured 263 votes in Parliament despite the issuance of a whip.
Speaking with media personnel inside the premises of Vidhan Bhavan during the second day of the winter session of the Maharashtra state legislature, Awhad accused the govt of undermining democracy and state rights.
“This move is a blatant attempt to centralise power and erode the democratic rights of states. Even the ruling NDA’s alliance partners seem divided on the issue,” Awhad stated.
The ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal seeks to synchronise national and state elections across the country. While the govt argues it would streamline governance and reduce costs, Awhad warned that it poses a serious threat to the federal structure and state autonomy.
Opposition leaders have called for greater public awareness to prevent the implementation of the bill, labelling it an attack on democracy. “The rift within the NDA is evident, and it’s clear that not everyone in their alliance is on board with this idea,” Awhad added.
With the central govt pushing forward, the proposal has triggered nationwide debate, with critics questioning its impact on regional representation and the democratic process. Political analysts foresee intensified discussions as the opposition mobilises against the bill.
